Spring 2017 Conference A Movement Without Borders: Decolonizing Feminism, Practicing Global Sisterhood
Today’s feminism often assumes a white, European female subject. As a result, the powerful histories, diverse cultures, and ground-breaking contributions of women of color are often left to the side in the modern feminist movement. As a coalition, we recognize that the current sociopolitical location of women can not be separated from race, ethnicity, or sexuality. Through several panel discussions, workshops, and speakers, the Women of Color Coalition Conference 2017 will examine the intersections of race, gender, ethnicity and sexuality in modern feminism. We will explore how women of color are liberating themselves from the dominant white cis-heteronormative narrative that ignores their voices. We will explore how women of color are using their cultural contexts in order to create an inclusive feminist activism. We will shine a light upon the many ways women of color have been misrepresented, silenced and erased in today’s popular culture by means of racism, sexism, misogyny, and other tools of oppression. We will think about the ways that we as a diverse community can connect to form a global sisterhood. Lastly, we will explore how we can create different forms of agency, allyship and advocacy that encompass the complexities of being a woman of color. No matter one’s race, ethnicity, or sexuality, women of color are women of wonder. The power and beauty we hold within deserves to be recognized and celebrated.
